Trump: I’m ‘Totally’ Willing to Shut Down the Government Over Wall Funding

As Congress and the White House approach the one-week mark to a potential, partial government shutdown, President Trump told Politico on Tuesday that he would “totally be willing” to shut down the government over a $3.4-billion difference in border wall funding.

Politico‘s Jake Sherman and Anna Palmer, who interviewed the president in the Oval Office, wrote:

Nine days ahead of a deadline that could trigger a partial government shutdown, with no solution in sight, the president told POLITICO in a Tuesday Oval Office interview that he is unflinchingly firm Congress must send him a bill approving $5 billion for his wall on the U.S.-Mexico border, and said he would “totally be willing” to shut down the government if he doesn’t get it. Democratic leaders — including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) — have said they would approve $1.6 billion for the wall, placing the two sides billions of dollars apart as the lame-duck session begins.

As the Playbook authors pointed out, Trump struck a more conciliatory tone in an earlier interview with The Washington Post.

President Trump said he is considering a backup plan if Congress rejects his demand for $5 billion in funding for his border wall, potentially including the continued use of troops and razor wire to prevent migrants from entering the country.

Trump’s remarks, made Tuesday during an Oval Office interview with The Washington Post, are a sign that he could be softening his position on the issue ahead of a Dec. 7 deadline. Trump had previously declared that he was willing to force a partial government shutdown if lawmakers did not agree to the $5 billion figure.

Which Trump will show up over the next nine days – the one insistent on fighting to the point of shutdown for wall funding, or the one searching for creative ways outside of Congress to control the border? The answer to that question will determine, in large part, whether the government shuts down next week. It’s unclear now if Republicans can pick off the nine Democrats necessary to support a bill that funds the wall at $5 billion instead of $1.6 billion.
