As the United States opened its embassy in Jerusalem on Monday, President Trump addressed the crowd and reaffirmed his commitment to America’s partnership with Israel.

Recognizing the anniversary of Israeli independence, Trump said the move of the embassy to Jerusalem has “been a long time coming.”

“Almost immediately after declaring statehood in 1948, Israel designated the city of Jerusalem as its capital – the capital the Jewish people established in ancient times,” he said.

The president defended Israel’s right “to determine its own capital.”

“On December 6, 2017, at my direction, the United States finally and officially recognized Jerusalem as the true capital of Israel,” he said.
