One of President Trump’s key lawyers in the Russia investigation, John Dowd, resigned this week, The New York Times reported on Thursday.

The Times‘ Michael Schmidt and Maggie Haberman reported between the lines of the Dowd resignation:

Mr. Dowd, who took over the president’s legal team last summer, had considered leaving several times in recent months and ultimately concluded that Mr. Trump was increasingly ignoring his advice, one of the people said.

…Mr. Dowd’s departure comes as the president has made clear he is seeking a more aggressive response to Mr. Mueller’s investigation. The president has in recent days begun publicly assailing Mr. Mueller, a shift in tone that appears to be born of Mr. Trump’s concern that the investigation is bearing down on him more directly.

Perhaps ironically, Dowd’s resignation could lead to one thing above any other: a sit-down interview between Special Counsel Robert Mueller and Trump. Why? Dowd “believed it was a bad idea” for Trump to sit down with Mueller, and now Dowd is gone.

Indeed, mere hours after the Times broke the news of Dowd’s resignation, Trump told CNN reporter Jeff Zeleny he’d “still like to” sit down with Mueller.
