Presidents Trump and Nieto announced on Monday that the United States and Mexico would terminate the NAFTA deal between their two countries, and they will instead join a new agreement, the US-Mexico Trade Agreement.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said that the deal would be “very special” for American farmers and manufacturers. “It’s an incredible deal for both parties,” he said. “It’s an incredible deal for the workers and citizens of both countries.”

“Mexico’s promised to immediately start purchasing as much [American] farm product as they can,” he added.

Speaking with Mexican President Nieto over the phone, Trump praised the hard work of both countries’ trade representatives, saying they worked long hours into the night to reach agreement on the trade deal.

The president said that he would begin negotiations with Canada “shortly,” trying to bring them into the new trade sphere. “They have tariffs of almost 300 percent on some of our dairy products,” he said, warning that the United States would tariff Canada’s auto exports.

As for China, the president indicated the trade war would continue, saying that it is “not the right time to talk.”
