"But ultimately, he's a competitor. He's representing Russia, I'm representing the United States. So in a sense, we're competitors."

President Donald Trump said Thursday that Russian President Vladimir Putin is neither an enemy or a friend, instead calling him a competitor during a press conference at the NATO summit.

BBC reporter Jonathan Beale asked Trump if he thinks he is going to get along with Putin at the upcoming summit between the two leaders, and whether Trump admires something about Putin.

“Well, he’s a competitor. He’s been very nice to me, the times I’ve met him. I’ve been nice to him. He’s a competitor.” Trump said.

“Somebody was saying, ‘Is he an enemy?’ He’s not my enemy. ‘Is he your friend?’ No, I don’t know him well enough. But the couple of times that I’ve gotten to meet him, we get along very well. You saw that,” Trump said.

Trump added that he hopes he will get along well with Putin.

“But ultimately, he’s a competitor. He’s representing Russia, I’m representing the United States. So in a sense we’re competitors,” Trump said.

“Not a question of friend or enemy. He’s not my enemy. And hopefully someday, maybe he’ll be a friend, it could happen. But I just don’t know him very well. I’ve met him a couple of times and when I did meet him most of you people were there.”
