President Trump pardoned Scooter Libby, the former chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney, on Friday.

Libby was convicted of various charges connected to the Valerie Plame affair, during the Bush administration. President Bush commuted Libby’s 30-month prison sentence, but left the rest of the conviction intact.

Trump scrubbed the rest of the conviction Friday, citing new developments in the case. One witness recanted her testimony, and the D.C. Court of Appeals allowed Libby to once again practice law, readmitting him to the bar. The Court cited “credible evidence” that the former vice presidential chief of staff did not commit the crime.

The White House released a statement about the pardon:

In light of these facts, the President believes Mr. Libby is fully worthy of this pardon. “I don’t know Mr. Libby,” said President Trump, “but for years I have heard that he has been treated unfairly. Hopefully, this full pardon will help rectify a very sad portion of his life.”
