President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin are meeting this week, with the ongoing U.S. investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election continuing to loom large over both presidencies nearly two years after the interference occurred.

Trump and Putin appear ready to get along, though – or at least give the appearance of doing so – with Trump tweeting compliments at Putin and Putin, Axios reported, being prepared to flatter Trump.

Trump’s congratulatory tweet to France, for winning the World Cup on Sunday, included praise for Putin’s hosting of the World Cup this year.

Meanwhile, Axios‘ Jonathan Swan reported Sunday night that Putin has “a keen understanding of what makes Trump tick,” and that’s flattery.

“Putin is very good at flattery and understanding the power of flattery with this president,” the source told me. Putin “talks him [Trump] up… and with this president that goes a long way.”

Hanging over both presidents, though, and the U.S.-Russia relationship, is a multi-year investigation by the Department of Justice and Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference with the 2016 presidential election in the U.S.

On Friday, the special counsel “issued an indictment of 12 Russian intelligence officers … in the hacking of the Democratic National Committee and the Clinton presidential campaign.”

Trump, perhaps sensitive to claims his election is in any way illegitimate, has mostly shrugged off the issue of a foreign power’s intervention in U.S. elections.

The two countries are also far apart on other issues of international import, including violence in Syria, the status of Ukraine, and the perpetual tug of war over influence in Europe (particularly eastern Europe).

Keep up with Monday’s coverage to see which of these issues, if any, are addressed publicly by the two leaders.
