President Donald Trump is trying to turn up the heat on Democrats, ahead of a soft March 5 deadline for a legal solution for so-called Dreamers.
President Donald Trump used his Twitter bully pulpit on Tuesday morning in an effort to pressure Democrats into a deal on immigration.
The president tweeted that a soft March 5 deadline for a legal solution for so-called Dreamers is the “last chance” for a deal:
Dreamers are young, undocumented immigrants who arrived in the U.S. as children and were protected under an Obama-era program called Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Trump announced last year that the DACA program will end on March 5, 2018, but court challenges may delay an end to the program.
The president wants a deal that would offer a 10- or 12-year pathway to citizenship for up to 1.8 million Dreamers, in exchange for money to build Trump’s wall and changes to legal immigration. Most Democrats have stood firm against the changes to legal immigration in Trump’s proposal, and some more liberal Democrats are also opposed to border security funding.
Trump also used Twitter to pressure Democrats on infrastructure on Tuesday.
