Trump Rallying in Indiana on Thursday; Will He Go After ‘Sleepin’ Joe’?

The last time the president rallied in Indiana, he branded Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN) with a nickname and went after Donnelly's record of siding with Democrats.

President Trump is visiting Evansville, Indiana on Thursday, where he will hold a campaign rally in support of Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Braun.

Braun is in a tough matchup with Sen. Joe Donnelly (D-IN), who’s running for a second six-year term.

The last time Trump rallied in Indiana – in May – he branded Donnelly with a nickname that Republicans hope will stick this fall.

NTK Network wrote at the time:

The inspiration for “Sleepin’ Joe”? The lack of Donnelly’s accomplishments after six years in the U.S. House and six years in the U.S. Senate. The Center for Effective Lawmaking named Donnelly the least effective Democratic U.S. senator in the 114th Congress (2015-16). What’s more, no Donnelly-sponsored piece of legislation has ever been passed into law.

Donnelly, for his part, is doing anything he can to highlight where he agrees with Trump, even as the president attacks him. In a new ad, Donnelly claims he’s working with Trump to “build a wall and protect our borders.” However, Donnelly’s a relative newcomer on supporting a wall – as recently as September 2017, Donnelly was refusing to answer questions about whether he supported building a border wall between the U.S. and Mexico.

One thing seems certain: Trump will go after Donnelly in Evansville on Thursday night. The questions that remain are just how Trump will go after Donnelly, and how the vulnerable Democratic senator will respond.
