President Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, and he said he would instruct the State Department to move the U.S. embassy from Tel Aviv to the holy city.

“After more than two decades of waivers, we are no closer to a lasting peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians,” he said. “I have determined that it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.”

“While previous presidents have made this a major campaign promise, they failed to deliver. Today, I am delivering.” the president declared.

Later in his speech, the president said that he would begin the process of moving the U.S. embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

President Trump did in fact sign another embassy waiver, which delayed the beginning of a diplomatic move while they plan logistics for the new embassy.
