Trump, Schumer, Pelosi to Meet at White House Ahead of Funding Deadline

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), the likely next speaker of the House, will meet with President Trump on Tuesday to discuss the upcoming deadline to fund large portions of the government.

Politico Playbook’s Anna Palmer and Jake Sherman pointed out on Tuesday morning that the deadline to fund parts of the government, including Homeland Security, is just 11 days away, and that Trump, Schumer, and Pelosi are far apart on how much money should be allocated to Trump’s desired border wall.

CHUCK, NANCY AND TRUMP … House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are going to the White House today to talk to President Donald Trump about the government shutdown, which is 11 DAYS away.

REMINDER: Most of the government is funded. There are seven bills that need to pass — among them is the DHS funding bill, and that’s where the border wall money is tied up. Right now, Schumer’s position is $1.3 billion for border security, and Trump wants $5 billion for a wall. They’re miles apart.

Of course, the $3.7-billion difference between Trump and Schumer on border security funding is pennies on the dollar when it comes to annual spending. The difference is less about balancing budgets and more about the symbolism of border-wall spending. Most Democrats detest the idea of a wall between the U.S. and Mexico, while Trump has made it a central plank of his platform.

To that effect, the president tweeted on Tuesday morning that “the Wall will get built.”

Watch in the early afternoon for statements from Schumer and Pelosi, and perhaps tweets from Trump, concerning how the meeting went.
