Trump Slams Kerry for Trying to Keep Iran Deal Alive

President Trump, in a tweet Monday morning, attacked former Secretary of State John Kerry’s “shadow diplomacy” in trying to save the Iran deal through backroom discussions with foreign dignitaries.

A report from the Boston Globe‘s Matt Viser revealed that Kerry has been in contact with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif and European diplomatic officials. In the past few months, Kerry discussed the deal with French President Emmanuel Macron, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, and E.U. diplomatic official Federica Mogherini, according to Viser.

President Trump fired back at the news on Monday morning, accusing Kerry of “possibly illegal Shadow Diplomacy”:

As the U.S. government comes up to a sanctions deadline on the Iran deal, the world expects Trump to take steps to withdraw the United States from the agreement.

In a response to Trump’s tweet, Kerry defended his actions as nothing unusual.
