President Trump’s administration announced Monday that the United States would expel 60 Russian diplomats and close Russia’s consulate in Seattle, in response to the neurotoxin attack in the United Kingdom.

The United Kingdom suffered a neurotoxin attack against its citizens when Russian operatives targeted a former Russian agent inside UK borders. Sergei Skripal, the former spy targeted by operatives, was hospitalized after the attack along with 20 others.

Trump’s government issue its response on Monday morning.

The president, often accused of a soft stance on Russia, appeared to take a harder line on the country than President Obama did in the wake of Russian interference in the 2016 election. Obama, who closed a consulate as well, only sent 35 Russians packing.

Trump’s response led a series of sanctions against Moscow, from countries across the west.

Canada and Europe immediately followed America’s lead, also expelling diplomats.
