Trump to Issue Executive Order to Add Citizenship Question to Census

President Donald Trump is expected to announce Thursday that his administration will add a citizenship question to the U.S. Census questionnaire through executive order.

The decision comes after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled last month that the federal government failed to make a compelling case for adding the question to the survey, sending the legal battle back to lower courts.

The president indicated almost immediately that he would fight the Supreme Court’s decision, either through executive order or other means. The Department of Justice deployed a new team of lawyers to tackle the case on Monday.

Trump tweeted Thursday morning that he planned to address the issue during a press conference at the White House Rose Garden later that day:

An administration official confirmed to NBC News that the purpose of the press conference was to address the executive order the president intends to sign.
