Trump Tweets About Iran for 6th Straight Day, As Protests Against Regime Continue

President Trump tweeted about protests in Iran for the sixth straight day on Wednesday morning, expressing his “respect” for the people who are protesting their government.

The current protests in Iran are the largest against the regime since 2009. At that time, the Obama administration displayed relative silence that some say helped the regime eventually gain momentum over anti-government protesters.

Trump, who is against the Iran nuclear deal signed in 2015 by the Obama administration and has taken a hard line against the Islamic republic, has made supporting anti-regime protesters an early foreign policy priority in 2018.

Meanwhile, halfway across the world, the government staged “a state-sponsored show of force,” according to Reuters, to counteract the unrest between anti-government demonstrators and police forces.

But, Reuters added, the “show of force” has not stopped the protesters, who were out on Tuesday night:

The demonstrations, organized on social media, have largely been held after dusk. They continued into Tuesday night with video footage posted on social media showing demonstrators on the streets and riot police deployed in several cities including Ahvaz in the southwest.

Iran could end up being a defining issue of President Trump’s first-term foreign policy, especially if the protests continue into the weeks and months ahead.
