Trump: U.S.-Russia Relationship Worse Than Ever, ‘Includ[ing] the Cold War’

President Donald Trump tweeted on Wednesday morning that the U.S. relationship with Russia “is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War.”

Trump’s call on Russia – to “[s]top the arms race” – appears tied to the actions of Russian and U.S. militaries in Syria. Russia is supporting the regime of Bashar al-Assad, and the U.S. is supporting some rebels seeking to oust Assad.

Trump appears to be playing his own ‘good cop, bad cop’ routine, though, as he tweeted earlier on Wednesday that U.S. missiles “will be coming” to Syria.

The latter tweet is consistent with reporting from Tuesday evening that Trump and his military advisers are considering “a more robust retaliatory strike against Syria than last year’s missile attack.”

From The New York Times:

Administration officials said they expected any new strike to be more expansive than last year’s, but the question was how much more. Possible options included hitting more than a single target and extending strikes beyond a single day.

But even so, Mr. Trump remained reluctant to deepen American involvement over a longer term.

Trump’s Twitter olive branch to Russia would be consistent with his desire to not get the U.S. involved in a lengthy Syria engagement.
