Trump Vows to Delay Census After Supreme Court Rejects Citizenship Question

President Donald Trump vowed to delay administering the 2020 census until after a decision is reached regarding a question about citizenship that the president wants added to the form.

That vow comes after the Supreme Court ruled that the administration’s “explanation for adding the question was insufficient and sent it back to the lower courts for further consideration,” according to Fox News.

More litigation is possible, but the government must begin printing census forms soon.

However, Trump raised the possibility of delaying the census until a decision is reached.

“I have asked the lawyers if they can delay the Census, no matter how long, until the United States Supreme Court is given additional information from which it can make a final and decisive decision on this very critical matter,” Trump tweeted Thursday.

The Supreme Court’s decision was written by Chief Justice John Roberts who wrote that the court was presented “with an explanation for agency action that is incongruent with what the record reveals about the agency’s priorities and decisionmaking process.”

The Trump administration claimed that adding the question would help the government to enforce Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
