President Trump signed a directive on Monday that ordered that National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to send American astronauts to Mars and the moon.

Speaking at the White House, the president cited America’s proud history of space exploration and asked NASA to prioritize putting American feet on far-off worlds.

“The directive I’m signing today will refocus America’s space program on human exploration and discovery,” he said. “It marks an important step in returning American astronauts to the moon for the first time since 1972 for long-term exploration and use.”

Trump did not limit his vision to returning to the moon, however.

“This time we will not only plant our flag and leave our footprint, we will establish a foundation for an eventual mission to Mars and perhaps someday to many worlds beyond,” he declared.

As evidence of predicted success, the president cited the victories he achieved in the first year of his presidency.
