Trump Will Meet with the California Immigration ‘Resistance’

President Donald Trump will meet with leaders from California who are rebelling against the state’s controversial ‘sanctuary state’ laws regarding immigration on Wednesday.

According to Politico:

“More than a dozen conservative officials from across the state are flying into Washington to meet with the president on Wednesday afternoon — a session that current and former administration officials say is intended to highlight Trump’s commitment to eradicate municipal safe harbors for immigrants.”

Earlier this year, the Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a lawsuit against California over the legality of the state’s so-called ‘sanctuary state’ laws.

California Governor Jerry Brown has called the DOJ lawsuit an “act of war,” on the part of the Trump administration.

Several communities in California have voted not to enforce the ‘sanctuary state,’ laws, contending they make it difficult for local authorities to cooperate with federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

The debate over the state’s ‘sanctuary state’ laws “kind of touches on a disconnect between the liberal elites who run this state and ordinary people who feel like the elites are more concerned with protecting illegal aliens from deportation than they are with rising crime and homelessness and a crumbling infrastructure,” one veteran California Republican strategist told Politico.

“We will not sit idly by and watch Sacramento leverage the safety of our communities in order to make a political point,” she said. “For too long politicians in Sacramento have used California as a pawn to further their own agenda and this issue has brought us to the tipping point,” Orange County Supervisor Michelle Steel, who will be attending the meeting, told Politico.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), San Diego Supervisor Kristin Gaspar, Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez, Los Alamitos Mayor Troy Edgar and Mayor Pro Tem Warren Kusumoto, along with several other Republican officials are expected to attend the meeting.

President Trump, Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen and Thomas Homan, the director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, are also expected to attend the meeting.
