President Trump announced Tuesday that the United States will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The president, in a statement from the White House, told the country that the deal did not serve American national security interests.

The Iran deal, one of President Obama’s signature foreign policy accomplishments, endured frequent fire from Trump on the campaign trail. The then-candidate called it “one of the worst deals” ever struck, and promised to tear it up.

Now the president appears to be holding to that pledge.

According to a report from The New York Times, Trump informed French President Emmanuel Macron of his decision ahead of the announcement.
