Tulsi Gabbard Destroys Kamala Harris’s Record During 2nd Debate

It was perhaps the best delivered attack of the night, and Harris offered up virtually no defense.

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) may not be leading in the polls, and she may not even make the stage next month for the third Democratic presidential primary debate, but the former Army combat veteran delivered perhaps the most poignant attack of the night when she picked apart Sen. Kamala Harris’s (D-CA) criminal justice record.

On the second night of the Democrats’ presidential primary debates in Detroit, Michigan, Gabbard and Harris shared the stage with the frontrunner, former Vice President Joe Biden (D-DE), Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), and others.

Prior to the debate, much attention was focused on the rematch between Biden and Harris, who clashed during the first debate in Miami in June. The two did spar, particularly on the issue of health care, but the main event was yet to come.

Not unlike Harris’s attacks on Biden at the Miami debate, Gabbard’s methodical deconstruction of Harris’s troubling prosecutorial career was so effective in part because few saw it coming. Or, at least, few expected Gabbard to be the one to deliver the hits.

“Senator Harris says she’s proud of her record as a prosecutor and that she’ll be a prosecutor president. But I’m deeply concerned about this record. There are too many examples to cite, but she put over 1,500 people in jail for marijuana violations, and then laughed about it when she was asked if she ever smoked marijuana.”

The crowd erupted in cheers as Gabbard laid into Harris’s record.

“She blocked evidence that would have freed an innocent man from death row until the courts forced her to do so. She kept people in prison beyond their sentences to use them as cheap labor for the state of California. And she fought to keep [a] cash bail system in place – that impacts poor people in the worst kind of way.”

Harris defended her record and criticized her fellow 2020 contenders for giving “fancy speeches” rather than getting their hands dirty and doing the work to reform the criminal justice system.

“The bottom line is, Senator Harris, when you were in a position to make a difference and an impact in these peoples’ lives, you did not,” Gabbard said in response. “And worse yet, in the case of those who were on death row – innocent people – you actually blocked evidence from being revealed that would have freed them until you were forced to do so. There is no excuse for that, and the people that suffered under reign as prosecutor, you owe them an apology.”

Biden piled on, elaborating further on the examples Gabbard brought up.

“Along came a federal judge and said enough, enough. And he freed 1,000 of these people. If you doubt me, Google ‘1,000 prisoners freed, Kamala Harris,‘” Biden said.

The result of that Google search? A Daily Beast story with damning details about Harris’s record as a prosecutor:

Ordered to reduce the population of California’s overcrowded prisons, lawyers from then-California Attorney General Kamala Harris’ office made the case that some non-violent offenders needed to stay incarcerated or else the prison system would lose a source of cheap labor.”
