Michael Mulvihill, the vice president of research for Fox Sports, crunched some numbers regarding yearly television numbers, and the trend lines show an interesting correlation: since Donald Trump declared his candidacy for president in June 2016, news viewership has increased while NFL viewership has decreased by similar amounts.

The TV numbers expert tweeted a thread of ratings information that showed NFL viewership falling 19 percent and news viewership, which is Trump-centric, climbed about 40 percent in the past few years:

Mulvihill made clear that he believes the 2017 numbers show that the dip in NFL ratings and rise in news ratings was not merely limited to the context of the 2016 election, and has continued into the first year of the Trump administration.

With so much of the news media focused on the Trump presidency, people may be turning off their sports to focus on “ratings machine DJT.”
