Two Democrats Drop Out of the 2020 White House Race Already

Two Democrats who were widely speculated as potential 2020 presidential candidates announced that they would not seek the presidency this week.

Former two-term governor of Massachusetts and current Bain Capital executive, Deval Patrick, “plans to announce shortly” that he will not run for president in 2020, according to a New York Times report.

Patrick had previously expressed reluctance about running to David Axelrod, former adviser to President Obama, for Axelrod’s podcast in September:

“It’s hard to see how you even get noticed in such a big, broad field without being shrill, sensational or a celebrity — and I’m none of those things and I’m never going to be any of those things,” Mr. Patrick said in a podcast interview in September with Mr. Axelrod.

According to the Times, the person who confirmed Patrick’s decision would not expand on the former governor’s reasoning. Patrick’s work at Bain could have been used against him, just as it was with Mitt Romney during that Massachusetts governor’s presidential bid in 2012.

But Patrick is not the only potential 2020 Democrat to bow out of the race this week. Prominent attorney Michael Avenatti released a statement on Twitter Tuesday stating that he made the decision not to run.

“After consultation with my family and at their request, I have decided not to seek the Presidency of the United States in 2020,” the statement read. “I do not make this decision lightly – I make it out of respect for my family. But for their concerns, I would run.”

While those are just two names removed from the list of dozens potential Democrats, their decisions are notable. Avenatti alone would have added a flair to the field not unlike what Donald Trump brought to the 2016 Republican field. Patrick, an African American two-term governor, undoubtedly would have brought an important perspective to the field.
