Two Minutes to Midnight: Scientists Say World Close to Armageddon

The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists moved their 'Doomsday Clock' to its closest position ever on Wednesday.

After analyzing the recent events of the first year of the Trump presidency, the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists moved the minute hand on their iconic ‘Doomsday Clock’ to its closest position to metaphorical midnight (the end of the world) in the history of the practice on Wednesday. The group of experts set the clock to “two minutes to midnight.”

Citing President Trump’s belligerent attitude toward North Korea and dismissal of environmental threats, the group of scientific experts warned that the world is as close as it has ever been to a catastrophic event. The president’s attitude toward nuclear proliferation also motivated the move.

The group also referenced the actions of other nuclear states like North Korea, India, Pakistan, and Russia, as well as the threat of climate change, as influencing the decision.

But they made it clear that nuclear concerns were at an all-time high. “In this year’s clock discussions, nuclear issues took center stage yet again,” the group announced. “To call the world’s nuclear situation ‘dire’ is to understate the danger.”

The Doomsday Clock’s 2018 move indicates that the world stands at as high a risk of catastrophe as it did during the height of the Cold War

In use since 1947, the closest the clock had previously gotten to midnight was 1953, when both the United States and Soviet Union tested hydrogen bombs. It was set to “two minutes to midnight” then as well.

Last year, the group moved the minute hand to “two and a half minutes to midnight,” citing Trump’s rise to power and his rhetoric.
