President Trump shook up Washington, D.C. on Thursday by mulling a return for the U.S. to the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) at a meeting with senators.

Daily Caller reporter Saagar Enjeti tweeted that Sen. Ben Sasse (R-NE) said Trump told National Economic Council (NEC) Director Larry Kudlow to “[g]o get it done,” with respect to rejoining TPP.

NTK Network noted on Thursday that the Trump move could be an effort to undercut China, amid growing tensions between the U.S. and China over tariffs and trade.

While Trump has committed himself to avoiding trade deals, the president may have calculated that more Americans suffer at China’s hands than would under the TPP. U.S. participation in the agreement could give it influence over China’s regional ambitions.

Trump seemed to acknowledge the rumors in a tweet Friday morning, in an effort to assure allies and voters that he “[w]ould only join TPP if the deal were substantially better than the deal offered to Pres. Obama.”

Meanwhile, some on Twitter pointed to an old tweet from Trump, in July 2016, in which he warned that “Crooked Hillary” Clinton would rejoin TPP once she’s elected.
