U.S., UK, France, Germany Statement: Russia Responsible for Nerve Agent Attack

The U.S., the UK, France, and Germany issued a rare joint statement on Thursday morning, blaming Russia for a nerve agent attack that has left nearly two dozen hospitalized in the UK.

Presidents Trump and Emmanuel Macron, Prime Minister Theresa May, and Chancellor Angela Merkel all co-signed the statement.

The statement builds on days of tension between Russia and the west:

  • May all but identified the Russian government as the culprit, in remarks before the House of Commons on Monday
  • May announced that the United Kingdom expelled 23 Russian diplomats on Wednesday, following an inadequate response from Moscow over a neurotoxin attack against a former Russian intelligence operative on UK soil
  • United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley condemned Russia on Wednesday for the attempted assassination of ex-spy Sergei Skripal

On Thursday, the Trump administration also announced new sanctions targeting 19 Russian individuals and five Russian organizations.
