The three members of the UCLA men’s basketball team who were arrested in China for shoplifting – LiAngelo Ball, Jalen Hill, and Cody Riley – thanked President Trump for his involvement in their release, during a press conference on Wednesday.

Trump personally asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to resolve the situation during a state visit to the country last week. The Chinese leader fulfilled Trump’s request on Tuesday and released the players, who returned to the United States that day.

In China, an offense like shoplifting can carry a punishment of up to 10 years in prison.

Trump expressed doubt that the players would thank him for his involvement in their release, on Wednesday.

“I want to thank the Chinese police and the government for taking care of us and treating us well during our time there. To President Trump, and the United States government, thank you for taking the time to intervene on our behalf. We really appreciate you helping us out,” UCLA’s Cody Riley said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“I would also like to thank President Trump and the United States government for the help they provided as well,” UCLA’s LiAngelo Ball said in a statement.

“Thank you to the United States government and President Trump for your efforts to bring us home,” UCLA’s Jalen Hill said in a statement.
