In a big boost for Republican efforts to pass a tax cut package, Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), announced Tuesday she would support a plan that would repeal Obamacare’s individual mandate. Senate leaders announced that provision of the tax bill last week.

Murkowski’s support for this legislative move was not known until she penned an op-ed in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. “I believe that the federal government should not force anyone to buy something they do not wish to buy, in order to avoid being taxed,” she wrote.

It’s still not known if Murkowski will support the overall tax package, but it’s a step in the right direction for GOP efforts. Murkowski’s vote is a critical one:

The Alaska moderate is a key swing vote as Republican leaders attempt to assemble support for their tax plan. They need 50 votes to move the measure through the Senate, and they control 52 seats. The bill would likely fail in the Senate if three Republicans oppose it, as Democrats are expected to unanimously oppose the plan.

The Washington Post noted that Murkowski’s op-ed in support of repealing the individual mandate could signal eventual support for the overall tax package, but that decision won’t likely be made until next week.
