Van Hollen: House Dems Should Delay Impeachment Until Mueller Finishes Investigation

"Then they'll have to make a decision at some point whether or not the president's conduct has reached the tipping point that would justify impeachment."

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) said that House Democrats should wait to impeach President Trump until after Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation concludes during an interview with CNN on Monday.

CNN’s Brianna Keilar asked Van Hollen whether there would be a backlash from the Democratic base if Democrats don’t pursue impeaching Trump.

Van Hollen said that House Democrats “should absolutely have additional hearings” to get to the bottom of the allegations facing Trump.

“Then they’ll have to make a decision at some point whether or not the president’s conduct has reached the tipping point that would justify impeachment,” Van Hollen said. “That obviously requires both a legal calculation but also a political one.”

“Nobody is eager to stampede into an impeachment proceeding, but if you have very serious violations of the law, then that is the process for holding a president accountable,” Van Hollen said. “But again, let’s wait and see what the Mueller report brings.”
