A local Vermont newspaper published an editorial this weekend begging its native son, Sen. Bernie Sander (I-VT), to forego another presidential campaign.

“Bernie Sanders should not run for president. In fact, we beg him not to,” the editorial began.

It’s a somewhat unusual move for a home state paper to make, but the Barre Montpelier Times Argus editorial board is not without its reasons. “[T]here are more things about another Sanders run at the White House that concern us than excite us,” the board wrote on Saturday.

For one thing, the editorial board is concerned about the fact that during his previous presidential campaign, Sanders “missed dozens of votes that likely would have helped Vermonters.” They also noted that he’s more likely to be spotted “on Colbert, CNN or MSNBC” than talking to local reporters in Vermont.

Among the board’s biggest concerns is what another Sanders run might do the the Democratic Party:

We fear a Sanders run risks dividing the well-fractured Democratic Party, and could lead to another split in the 2020 presidential vote. There is too much at stake to take that gamble.

For us, this comes down to principle over ego. It is one thing to start a revolution, but at a certain point you need to know when to step out of the way and let others carry the water for you.

The editorial board also brought up the allegations of sexual misconduct that took place during Sanders’ 2016 campaign. The senator drew fire for saying he was “a little bit busy running around the country” to be aware of the allegations made among his staff when CNN’s Anderson Cooper asked him.
