Vilsack Dodges Questions About a Possible 2020 Senate Run

Former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack (D-IA) who served as former President Barack Obama’s Secretary of Agriculture dodged reporters’ questions about possibly challenging Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) in Iowa’s 2020 Senate race on Wednesday.

“Right now, the focus needs to be, for me, on making sure the party is prepared to do its job, relative to the caucuses, and to make sure that we have the kind of debate within the Democratic Party that will help us have a viable candidate in 2020 for president,” Vilsack told reporters on Wednesday, according to the Des Moines Register.

A reporter asked Vilsack whether he was keeping the door open to possibly challenge Ernst in 2020.

“The door’s not open, closed, shut — I don’t even know where the door is,” Vilsack responded.

According to the Des Moines Register, Vilsack said that his “immediate focus is on the presidential nominating process that begins with Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucuses.”

“Later on down the year, we can start focusing, I suppose, on legislative races and Senate races and Congressional races and all that kind of stuff,” Vilsack said. “We just got through an election, from that perspective, so I think we need to take a big, deep breath and understand that (presidential candidates) are coming out, they’re going to want to hear from us, and we have to have something to say to them.”

Vilsack did take a campaign-style swing at Ernst when he mocked her 2014 campaign pledge that she would “make ’em squeal” in Washington, D.C.

“‘Make ‘em squeal?'” Vilsack asked rhetorically. “Have we made even these folks squirm at all? I don’t know. I haven’t seen it.”
