Walmart, the largest employer in the U.S., announced a 22-percent increase in its starting wage and nationwide bonuses on Thursday, the result of the GOP’s tax bill passed in December.

CNBC reported:

The big-box retailer announced Thursday it will be increasing its starting wage rate for hourly employees in the U.S. to $11, and expand maternity and parental leave benefits. The retailer also will pay a one-time cash bonus to eligible employees of as much as $1,000.

Currently, Walmart’s starting wage is $9 until workers complete a training program. Then, they receive $10.

Democrats may thumb their nose at the news, but Walmart’s decision could impact up to 2.3 million Americans. That’s how many people Walmart employed as of April 2017, according to Time.

In addition, Business Insider reported in June 2017 that Walmart is the top employer in each of these states:

  • Alabama
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Indiana
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Mississippi
  • Missouri
  • Montana
  • New Hampshire
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • Virginia
  • West Virginia
  • Wyoming

Vulnerable Democratic senators and representatives in some of these states – including Sens. Claire McCaskill (D-MO), Joe Manchin (D-WV), Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Bill Nelson (D-FL), and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) – will have to explain to voters why they voted against a raise for thousands in 2018.
