WaPo Editor: Bezos Hasn’t Interfered with Our Coverage

Yet the newspaper has not covered stories about Amazon's workplace environment.

The Washington Post’s editor Martin Baron claimed that Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, who bought the newspaper in 2013, hasn’t interfered with the Post’s coverage of Amazon during a discussion at the Aspen Ideas Festival on Wednesday.

CNN’s Brian Stelter asked Baron how is address concerns that Bezos is meddling in the Post’s newsroom concerns that President Trump has expressed in the past.

“They just don’t happen to be true,” Baron said. “If he were meddling, the nature of newsrooms is that people would complain, people would leak it, people would be upset, and you haven’t heard anything like that.”

“He wants us to be independent that’s what he wants. He hasn’t interfered on anything about Amazon. He hasn’t interfered on anything about himself personally. He hasn’t interfered on any other stories,” Baron said.

If Baron’s claim that Bezos hasn’t interfered with how the Post covers Amazon, then why hasn’t the paper covered the conditions of Amazon’s workplaces?

The Daily Caller News Foundation recently highlighted how the Washington Post has not covered the conditions of Amazon’s workplaces, which have been compared to, “a stint in prison.”

The Daily Caller reported:

“The easiest explanation for why WaPo employees have refrained from scrutinizing its owner is that they don’t want to rock the boat. After all, media jobs are hard to come by, and it is easy to see Bezos’s ownership as a rock of stability.”

“Journalists at WaPo seem to have few problems targeting Bezos and his own personal fortune — yet apparently draw the line at attacking the major source of his wealth, Amazon.”
