The Washington Post‘s fact-check team, led by Glenn Kessler, verged into editorial board territory on Monday with a fact-check of a National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC) ad against Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO).

The ad covers the controversy over the federal subsidies that businesses tied to McCaskill’s husband have received since she took office.

The Post decided to give the ad “Three Pinocchios,” asserting that “the implication that McCaskill is getting rich at voters’ expense is false.” This, of course, is despite the fact that federal subsidies no doubt improved the financial standing of the businesses that received those subsidies.

What caught NTK Network’s eye, though, was this call at the end of the fact check from Kessler:

Because this attack did not move voters in 2012, Republicans should retire this smear campaign and move on toward a debate on the issues.

The closing sentence feels like it belongs more in a pro-McCaskill editorial than a sober, non-partisan fact-check of an ad.
