Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) has long claimed to be pro-life, which would make him one of the few congressional Democrats to still hold pro-life views. Those views may come under new scrutiny, though, after Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), a possible presidential candidate in 2020, campaigned for Casey this weekend on a pro-choice platform.

In video posted by the GOP group America Rising, Warren fired up a group of Casey supporters by asking, “How many of you are here because you believe a woman ought to have a right to make her own decisions about her body?” The group of supporters offered a cheer and applause at Warren’s line.

Casey, who is up for reelection this year in a state Donald Trump won in 2016, is pro-life. Or, at least, he claims to be.

In July 2018, Politico profiled the “truth behind Bob Casey’s ‘pro-life’ stand,” noting the Pennsylvania senator actually has a 75-percent voting record with Planned Parenthood since 2011 and had a 100-percent rating with NARAL in 2016 and 2017.

Casey’s voting record in Congress aligns significantly with abortion rights groups such as Planned Parenthood and NARAL. He has voted along with Planned Parenthood 75 percent of the time since 2011. And he voted with NARAL Pro-Choice America 100 percent of the time in 2016 and 2017, although his 2018 rating is sure to be lower.

Casey’s mixed record on abortion – claiming to be pro-life, while supporting and seeking the support of pro-choice leaders – may subject him to scrutiny from voters this fall.

The ‘have it both ways’ approach is reminiscent of a 2017 controversy involving Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV). The West Virginia senator, also up for reelection in a ‘Trump state’ this year, has been pictured holding both a “I Stand With Planned Parenthood” sign and a “We Don’t Need Planned Parenthood” sign.
