Warren Claims She’ll Serve Full Senate Term, ‘That’s My Plan’

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA), long viewed as a likely 2020 presidential candidate, claimed Thursday she would serve her full six-year term if reelected to the Senate in November.

“Yes, that’s my plan. I’m running for the United States Senate in 2018,” Warren told reporters Thursday, when asked if she would commit to serving out her full term. “I am not running for president of the United States. That’s my plan.”

Warren’s remarks echo those made on Fox News Sunday last month. When asked by host John Roberts, Warren said she wouldn’t run for president amid fits of laughter. She also rather clumsily answered the question on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” that same weekend.

Close observers will note that Warren carefully stated that she “plans” to run for Senate and not for the White House in 2020. Plans can always change, and that could serve as a release valve for Warren, if she decides to jump in the Democratic primary.

The 2020 Democratic presidential field is expected to be a crowded one, but Warren has already taken steps to cozy up to state parties across the country, donating $265,000 to the Democratic National Committee and all 50 state parties.
