Warren Claims to Stand For Dreamers, But Voted Against Trump’s Bipartisan Immigration Bill

The president's proposal would have fixed the U.S. immigration system, built a wall, and protected the Dreamers.

At a press conference on Tuesday, Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) told reporters that she wanted to protect Dreamers as the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program expired this week. But the liberal senator refused to do so when action would have handed President Trump any sort of legislative victory.

In February, the president’s proposed bill, backed by 3 Democrats, failed in the Senate. The proposal crafted a compromise, protecting the Dreamers, building the wall, and slashing legal immigration levels. Warren voted against the bill, leaving DACA recipients in limbo.

But on Tuesday, she claimed that she’s backing the Dreamers’ cause.

“I’ve been posting stories nearly every day about Dreamers from Massachusetts,” the senator said. “These are real people whose lives are on the line.”

“They need to keep fighting, and we need to keep fighting alongside them,” she added.
