Warren Struggles to Defend Her DNA Test

"I am not a citizen of any tribal nation. Only tribes determine tribal citizenship. It's not done by DNA."

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) struggled to defend her DNA test and the media melee that resulted during a Massachusetts Senate debate on Friday.

Earlier in the week, Warren released the results of her DNA test in an attempt to quiet criticism about her claim that she had Native American ancestry.

The results on the test showed that Warren could have a Native American ancestor anywhere from six to 10 generats back, potentially making her between 1/64th to 1/1,024th Native American.

“I’ve put out 10 years of taxes, I’ve put out my hiring records, all the papers that anybody could find. I put out my family history, shoot, I even took a DNA test. It’s there. I am an open book,” Warren said. “And I’ve also tried to make clear throughout this: I am not a citizen of any tribal nation. Only tribes determine tribal citizenship, it’s not done by DNA. The Boston Globe has done an extensive analysis and come up with the fact that nothing in my background ever made any difference in my hiring.”

Warren was criticized for releasing the results of her DNA test by almost everyone, including Native Americans and Democratic supporters.
