Just over two years ago, a Democracy for America (DFA) poll prompted the far-left liberal group to mount a “Draft Elizabeth Warren” effort amidst the 2016 presidential campaign. In a similar poll conducted recently and released Tuesday, she’s languishing in the single digits and trailing three other Democrats.

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) topped the first Democracy for America poll of the 2020 presidential season with 36 percent. The second-place finisher, former Vice President Joe Biden, finished a full 21 points behind Sanders with 15 percent. Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), who lost his Senate bid against Sen. Ted Cruz (D-TX) last month, finished in third place with 12 percent.

Warren managed to scrape together just 8 percent support among DFA members, one point ahead of Sen. Kamala Harris’s (D-CA) 7 percent.

DFA Executive Director Charles Chamberlain said the poll shows that Warren and Harris “have some work to do” to compete with Sanders, per Politico.

The DFA poll is a better reflection of the mood among the liberal grassroots than all likely Democratic voters. Biden has led in most public opinion polls to date, but Chamberlain said he thinks liberals will turn on the 76-year-old Delaware native.

He said support for Biden likely draws in part from nostalgia for the Obama administration and that, among progressive Democrats, “I have a feeling the wheels come off the cart when he starts to campaign.” Biden, however, has consistently led early national polls of Democratic voters.

The poll was conducted from Nov. 29 to Dec. 14, and 94,000 DFA members cast votes.
