Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) is trailing former Vice President Joe Biden by 12 points among likely Democratic voters in Massachusetts, according to a new poll by Suffolk University/Boston Globe released on Tuesday.

The poll found Biden leading the crowded Democratic presidential primary field with 22 percent support in Massachusetts. Warren was in second place with 10 percent support followed by South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg (D-IN) with 8 percent and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) with 6 percent.

Suffolk University Political Research Center director David Paleologos, who oversaw the poll, told the Boston Globe that Warren’s poor showing is due in part because Massachusetts Democrats don’t think she can defeat President Trump in the general election.

“If [voters] don’t see a candidate that’s able to remove Trump, that’s going to impact that candidate’s viability in the primary,” Paleologos said.

“I love Elizabeth Warren here in Massachusetts,” a 50-year-old from West Roxbury told the Globe. “But I feel that she’s also a lightning rod in a way that she probably doesn’t intend, and I’m not sure she has broad enough appeal to really run effectively on a national level.”

It is very likely that these numbers could change drastically in the coming months, as 40 percent of Democratic primary voters said that were still undecided about who they would support.
