WashPost Fact-Checker Blasts Democrats for False Narrative on the Economy

Democrats want voters to believe that the U.S. economy, which has had an unemployment rate at or near 4 percent for the past 18 months, is doing terribly.

The Washington Post’s resident fact-checker, Glenn Kessler, compiled a series of claims made by Democrats, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), about the state of the U.S. economy.

Universally, all the Democrats panned the state of the economy, despite the fact that the unemployment rate has been at or near 4 percent for the past 18 or so months. Wages are also rising faster than they have in about a decade.

Still, Democrats seem intent on painting a bleak picture when it comes to the economy.

“Unemployment is low because everyone has two jobs. Unemployment is low because people are working 60, 70, 80 hours a week and can barely feed their family,” Ocasio-Cortez said last year when she was a candidate.

“Millions of Americans are forced to work two or three jobs just to survive,” Sanders said just last week.

Harris said she hears from people that the economy is doing well because the stock market is surging and the unemployment rate is down. “Yeah, well, I’ve been traveling our country. People are working. They’re working two and three jobs to pay the bills. It’s not working for working people,” she said last month.

But Kessler stressed that they all miss a larger point: the number of people working two or more jobs has been basically static for the past 10 years.

“Actually, no matter how hard politicians try to spin it, the percentage of people with two or more jobs has been around 5 percent for almost a decade,” he wrote. “Democrats suggesting this is something new — in an era of unusually low unemployment — are misleading their supporters.”
