Failed 2014 Democratic Texas gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis announced that she is running for Congress in 2020 against Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) for Texas’s 21st Congressional District on Thursday.

“Just spoke with @wendydavis at the @TexasObserver Molly Awards Dinner. She says she’s not announced any challenge to @chiproytx, will be ready to confirm her future plans in about 3 weeks. #txlege,” Lauren McGaughy of the Dallas Morning News tweeted on Thursday.

Davis became something of a progressive icon for her filibuster to block abortion legislation in the Texas state legislature, which propelled her to challenge Greg Abbott in 2014.

Democrats at the time believed that Davis could turn the deep red state of Texas blue, but in the end Abbott eviscerated Davis by a 21-point margin.

Since then, Davis has fallen on hard times and was forced to hold an estate sale for her personal belongings.

Now Davis appears ready to re-enter the political arena with her campaign announcement on Thursday.
