West CO Ed Board: Polis Should Change Mind, Attend Club 20 Debate

The editorial board of a newspaper covering western Colorado towns is calling on Democratic gubernatorial candidate Jared Polis to attend a Club 20 debate he is currently planning to skip.

The Journal, which covers Cortez, Mancos, and Dolores, wrote on Thursday evening:

Club 20, an influential coalition of businesses and local governments from the state’s 22 Western Slope counties, has held highly publicized and well-attended election-year debates on the first Saturday after Labor Day for 30 years. For a candidate to skip out, especially one running for governor, is a genuine surprise.

…But [the Polis campaign has] had no real defense for the impressions the decision provoked, which are largely negative and centered on a cynical view that Polis doesn’t need Western Slope votes to win in November because he will have so much support from the Front Range. So why bother with Club 20?

The Journal went on to muse that Polis is skipping the Club 20 debate because Club 20 typically supports more conservative candidates. The editorial board said “[w]e can see the point, but we can’t support it.” The board then urged Polis to do three things: 1) change his mind, 2) prepare, 3) attend the Club 20 debate.

The Club 20 debate has been a major issue for Polis in the last several weeks of the gubernatorial race.
