Democrats are counting on suburban congressional seats like Pennsylvania’s First Congressional District to deliver them to the House majority in 2018, but indicators from that race signal trouble for liberals heading into the midterms.

According to a report from The Philadelphia Inquirer, Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), the incumbent in PA-1, is enjoying heavy support from local unions. The traditionally-Democratic constituency has donated hundreds of thousands of dollars to Fitzpatrick’s reelection campaign. Major labor groups are endorsing Fitzpatrick:

Fitzpatrick also won the official endorsement of the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, an alliance of 45 unions across the state. That’s no easy task: Of the 190-plus candidates backed by the group in 2018, only 13 are Republicans. He’s received nods from the Pennsylvania State Education Association, AFSCME Council 13, and local firefighters and police unions, too, among others.

Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick’s Democratic opponent, millionaire Scott Wallace, has raised a paltry $3,000 from unions, the Inquirer reports.

If some of the most loyal Democratic voters are abandoning Wallace in a must-win race, liberals may find that their 2018 chances are dwindling.
