What is America’s Greatest Threat? Republicans, Dems, & Independents Respond

A new NBC News poll reveals that Americans are divided, by party, over what they consider the greatest immediate threat to the U.S.

The “All adults” result, as asked by NBC News and SurveyMonkey, found Americans closely divided over four separate threats to the country:

  • 27 percent said Russia
  • 23 percent said ISIS
  • 21 percent said North Korea
  • 17 percent said Russia

Another eight percent said Iran was America’s greatest immediate threat.

But the rankings are wildly different whether you’re a Republican, Democrat, or independent.

GOP voters rank ISIS and China as the top threats:

  • 31 percent of Republicans said ISIS
  • 25 percent said China
  • 16 percent said North Korea
  • 15 percent said Iran

Meanwhile, Democrats rank the GOP’s bottom choice, Russia (10 percent), as the top threat to the U.S. by far:

  • 47 percent of Democrats said Russia
  • 25 percent said North Korea
  • 13 percent said ISIS
  • 10 percent said China

Independents, meanwhile were even more closely divided over the greatest threat than the general populace:

  • 26 percent said ISIS
  • 24 percent said Russia
  • 22 percent said North Korea
  • 19 percent said China

It turns out partisan affiliation can even affect how Americans view the relative size of threats in the world.
