What Trump and Allies Think About 8 Potential 2020 Challengers

It is unusual to get a president’s thoughts on his or her potential challengers in a forthcoming election.

Then again, Donald Trump is no typical president.

Politico‘s Annie Karni has Trump’s thoughts – or the thoughts of GOP strategists – on eight Democrats frequently mentioned as potential challengers in 2020.

Some of his comments may surprise you:

  • Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT): too old, according to Trump, and has argued “that Sanders, now 76, wouldn’t have the energy to run another national campaign.”
  • Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA): “easy to beat”
  • Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ): won’t run
  • Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA): “the president seemed not to have her on his radar yet”
  • Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY): a former White House staffer said “I hope CNN has Kirsten Gillibrand on every minute of every day”
  • Former Vice President Joe Biden: Biden causes some worry among Trump’s associates, as someone “who blue-collar workers could [identify] with”
  • Oprah Winfrey: “she’d be [Democrats’] best,” one GOP strategist said
  • Mark Cuban: a former White House official said Cuban “gets under Trump’s skin like no one else”

Of course, through tweets Trump has already made his thoughts clear on “Crazy Bernie Sanders,” “Goofy Elizabeth Warren,” Cory Booker (“I know more about Cory than he knows about himself“), “Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand,” “not very bright” Biden, and “not smart enough” Mark Cuban.

And Oprah? How Trump would tackle her candidacy is more of an open question.
