What’s in the U.S.-North Korea Agreement Signed By Trump and Kim

Following their historic handshake and meeting in Singapore, President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signed a joint agreement that makes at least four statements charting a path forward for the two leaders as they try to make peace.

According to text of the agreement shared by CNBC, Trump and Kim agreed to the following:

  • The United States and the DPRK commit to establish new U.S.-DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity.
  • The United States and the DPRK will join their efforts to build a lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula.
  • Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
  • The United States and the DPRK commit to recovering POW/MIA remains, including the immediate repatriation of those already identified.

The third item, the Panmunjom Declaration, was an agreement signed by Kim and South Korea President Moon Jae-in in April. The accord commits both leaders to ending the decades-long Korean war and “complete denuclearisation, a nuclear-free Korean Peninsula.”

The first and second items could benefit the Kim regime, which has worried for decades that U.S. leaders want to eventually remove and replace the family in charge of North Korea.

One item not included in the agreement Trump and Kim signed Tuesday? CVID.

What is CVID? According to a State Department spokesperson, it’s the U.S. policy toward denuclearization in North Korea: “complete, verifiable, irreversible denuclearization.”

In this agreement, it’s only ‘CD’ for now. Trump will presumably work on the ‘VI’ in subsequent summits with Kim, if they occur.
