While Beto Finds Himself on Solo Road Trip, ‘Draft Beto’ Is Trying to Fill the Void

Nobody knows if he’ll actually run for president or not, but in the meantime, volunteers are preparing the way for a Beto O’Rourke 2020 campaign.

“Have been stuck lately. In and out of a funk,” former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) wrote in a Medium post on Wednesday. “Maybe if I get moving, on the road, meet people, learn about what’s going on where they live, have some adventure, go where I don’t know and I’m not known, it’ll clear my head, reset, I’ll think new thoughts, break out of the loops I’ve been stuck in.”

O’Rourke is currently on a road trip of self-discovery, reportedly staying in motels and meeting voters in various states across the country.

Meanwhile, a group aptly named “Draft Beto” is operating out of shared office space in Brooklyn, New York. Their goal is two-fold: demonstrate to their namesake that a nationwide, grassroots movement is at his fingertips should he decide to run for president and lay the necessary groundwork that would make a transition from ordinary citizen to candidate for the Democratic nomination as painless as possible.

“What we’re doing,” one Draft Beto volunteer told The Atlantic, “is essentially building a campaign to hand over to him in the event he runs.”

Out of a shared office space in Brooklyn and through a network of phone calls and emails, political operatives behind a group called Draft Beto have raised $20,000 from 450 donors and parked the money in an account waiting for the former congressman and Senate candidate from Texas to announce a presidential campaign, probably on Facebook Live, his preferred outlet. The email list is already up to 6,000. House parties have been going on for the past few weeks.

For someone who would get into a presidential race without much buildup or preparation, that could be an important head-start.

While it’s unclear where O’Rourke’s road trip will take him, and whether the ultimate destination is a 2020 presidential run, he is expected to appear in New York City on February 5 for a sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey.
