WHIP COUNT: Haspel to Be Confirmed for CIA With at Least 54 Votes

Gina Haspel, President Trump’s pick to be CIA director, is expected to clear the Senate Intelligence Committee today, putting her one step closer to full confirmation by the U.S. Senate.

Haspel had 10 votes of support on the 15-member Senate Intelligence Committee, given all eight Republicans, Sen. Mark Warner (D-VA) and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) support her confirmation.

Where does she stand in the full Senate, though? She won’t win the two-thirds support she earned on the Intelligence Committee, but Haspel has the votes to be confirmed by the 100-member U.S. Senate without drama.

49 REPUBLICANS

The only Republican who may vote against Haspel is Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY). Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), who’s being treated for cancer in his home state Arizona, opposes Haspel’s confirmation but will likely not vote.

That leaves 49 Republicans in support of Haspel.

FIVE DEMOCRATS

At least five Democrats – Sens. Mark Warner (D-VA), Joe Manchin (D-WV), Joe Donnelly (D-IN), Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), and Bill Nelson (D-FL), have announced they’re voting for Haspel. The latter four are up for reelection in 2018.

Most of the remaining 42 Democrats – and the two liberal independents, Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Angus King (I-ME) – are expected to oppose Haspel.

But with five Democratic votes, Haspel is well on her way to confirmation.
