White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters on Thursday that President Trump believes Roy Moore, the Republican candidate for Senate in Alabama, should step aside if the allegations about him sexually assaulting minors turn out to be true.

Six women have come forward and accused Moore of sexually assaulting them when they were minors. Republican leaders have called for Moore to drop out of the race and the Republican National Committee (RNC) officially pulled out of the race on Wednesday.

President Trump has not yet personally addressed the situation. A reporter asked Sanders whether Trump believes Moore’s accusers, and if he thinks Moore should step aside.

“The president believes that these allegations are very troubling and should be taken seriously, and he thinks the people of Alabama should make the decision on who their next senator should be,” Sanders responded.

The reporter then asked Sanders if that means the president thinks Moore should stay in the race.

“The president said in his statement earlier in this week that if the allegations are true, then that Roy Moore should step aside. He still firmly believes that,” Sanders responded.
